On the 4th of July, my daughter and I decided to brave the crowds and hiked the Cub Lake Loop.  It had been a while since I was in the park so I was anxious to get out and enjoy the warm weather and wildflowers.  The hike to Cub Lake is 2.3 miles and if you hike the loop connecting the trails to the Pool and then return back to the Fern Lake TH it is approximately 5 miles.  The hike begins in the West end of Moraine park.  The trail follows a ridge and taking you along the drainage from the lake which allows excellent wildlife, bird viewing and wildflowers.  As you reach the lake you enter a huge aspen grove providing filtered sunlight and it is home to Monks Hood and many other wild flowers, plus huge Aspens…….. After a steep climb at the end we arrived at Cub Lake.  Beautiful as ever and covered with pond lilies this time of year. To complete the Cub Lake Loop you continue past the lake and hook up with the Fern Lake Trail then hike down to The Pool and out towards the Fern Lake Trailhead. There is an extra mile because you have to walk on the road to reach the parking area.
